Hearing of Paul Golden's death brings sadness and happy memories. I am sad at the loss of a good man, a kind and generous confrere, a capable and most helpful canonist, and a dear, loving friend. My memories of Paul go back to 1977, when I entered the college seminary at St. Thomas in Denver. I won't dwell on those long ago memories other that to say that he has been a part of my life for a long time! My most powerful memories of Paul are from the Fall of 1987. I was newly ordained and at my first assignment at SVDP High School in Lemont. I was faced with a difficult situation regarding one of the older confreres at the HS and was not sure what to do. Paul was at DePaul University at the time and I called him. He invited me to come into the city to see him right away. His guidance and level headedness calmed me and directed me in the situation. It is something I have never forgotten. More recently, when I was Assistant Provincial, Paul was always ready and willing to help me with difficult cases and situations. Again, his knowledge and pastoral skill when dealing with difficult situations was always helpful. And his gentle, kind support of me personally in the midst of those challenging moments will never be forgotten. May God bless him and we thank him for his life as a confrere, priest, canon lawyer, and friend. May he rest in peace!
